Snake venom - Poison for snakes?

In India law prohibits any person from catching snakes for any purpose. But recently in the State of Maharashtra a decision seemingly opposite to it is taken by government by which snake -friends are permitted to catch the snakes, extract their venom and supply it to institutes who manufacture anti-venom from it. Surprisingly Minister for State - Forest Mr. Pachpute has taken initiative in it.

Though it seems a practical decision it is going to arouse a series of questions.

There are hundreds of snake-friends in Maharashtra who catch snakes only when they intrude homes, are either dangerous or there is possibility of them being killed and release them in the forest. They do it for a social cause, not from business point of view.

One gram of snake venom costs thousands of rupees and this price varies according to species of snake. After giving a free license to catch snakes and extract their venom for sale there is a danger that it will take a form of business, more and more snakes will be caught just to earn money. Though law says that snakes caught for this purpose should only belong to urban area, who is going to observe this as there is no tag of such kind attached to snakes.

Already human interference is too much in the ecosystem of forest and decision of such kind will increase it to a greater extent. Many species of the snake including Indian Egg eater, King Cobra are on the verge of extinct, probably many new names will come in it.

Its not only about extracting the snake venom; its purification, stability of its contents and its conversion into powder form are next important steps of making an anti-venom which is a very costly affair. Moreover there are no fixed guidelines regarding how many snakes one person can have, for how many days and when to leave them back in forests. The government can work as a vigilance authority in all this but it has made its mind to privatize this project.
It seems that hon'ble Minister has not consulted with experts in this field before initiating this.

Though there is really a deficiency of snake venom which is essential for manufacturing life saving anti-venom, this project should go into right direction and proper planning so as to conserve forests and its ecosystem. Till then we should unite to oppose it.

After the death of 1st year medical student from Himachal Pradesh Mr. Aman Kacharu, ragging has once again become the subject of debate and discussion. The Supreme Court of India has ordered states to take prompt steps as ragging squads and strict legal action against those involved.

Whether only formulating laws will be sufficient? Because laws were there even before, still such incidences have not yet stopped! If we look into the psyche of those involved, we see that, they do it either to get a cruel happiness or more importantly because they were being ragged by seniors.

In the former case psychological assessment and counseling might prove beneficial, but in later, vicious cycle has to be broken. Few positive steps have to be taken if we really want to curtail this problem-

Anti ragging squad should have few senior students along with principal and staff.

Organize a freshers party, which should be a joint venture of seniors and college. Let them get acquainted with one another in a relaxed mood.

Arrange special sessions with the help of psychologist, social workers, NGO's for all the students to inculcate more positive attitude about themselves and others.

Select few senior students who are topper in academics, sports, cultural activities etc. and ask them to monitor and help a small group of junior students.

Ideas can be many more. But only with relentless application of laws and such positive steps the social stigma like ragging can be annihilated and a healthy campus culture will be maintained.

Voting Percentage - A Serious Thought

Elections for 15th Lok sabha in India are in progress. Four stages are over, just one is remaining. If we look at the overall percentage of voting it ranges between 40 to 50%. It means about 50 to 60% have not voted.

What is the reason? - Illiteracy? - Indifference? or Carelessness?

Illiteracy - We say education makes us more responsible. But here voting is comparatively higher in areas where literacy and economic status is below average!

Indifference - Have we lost interest in the Politics? True but only to some extent. Seeing the current scenario a feeling of hatred definitely arises in our mind. Politics and corruption have become synonyms. When somebody says he is in politics, we look upon him with contemptuous eyes. But can it be an excuse for not voting?

Carelessness - Seems to be more true. We either go to a movie or a small trip, enjoy vacation instead of voting - thinking what difference does it make if I do not vote! Why I should waste my vote for these dirty politicians?

Think - When we have not done our simplest yet most powerful moral duty of democracy, do we have any right to abuse politicians for making mess of everything?

In Ramayana, Jambuwant has reminded Hanuman of his emense power which he was forgotten.

In Democracy, we common people are real king, we decide the fate of political leaders and there by nation.

Environment Friendly Car - A Dream

With the introduction of Nano Car, everyone's eye in the automobile industry have glittered with surprise! A 623 cc car is not only cost effective but also supposed to satisfy Euro - 4 international norms.

Automobile is speedily flourishing industry in developing countries like India since last two decades. But at the same time it is proving to be hazardous as far as health in general is concerned. Pollution has become a deadly problem and automobile pollution is one of them. Smoke emitted through vehicles contain lead as one of the key element which can said to be silent killer of human race. It not only affects our nervous system but also has proved to be carcinogenic.

So the time has come where an alternative has to be found earliest. I have read somewhere, students of Engineering at Delhi are trying to make a Hybrid Car which will run both on petrol and electricity. If this comes true it can prove to be a boon.

Petrol and Diesel resources are very limited; they cannot be regenerated and so have to be utilized judiciously. And moreover as pollution is becoming a burning issue worldwide, invention like that of a Hybrid Car can minimize many problems. But efforts in these directions should not only be limited to the students level. Business giants and automobile genius should come forward in making this dream a reality.
